Premarital Counselling
A beautiful wedding is important, but a strong marriage needs more than a well-planned ceremony. Premarital counselling gives couples a safe, guided, and intentional space to prepare for the realities of married life before they say, “I do.”
At Intentional Therapy & Counselling Services, we help couples build a strong foundation for marriage through honest conversations, practical tools, emotional preparation, and professional support. Our process is warm, structured, evidence-informed, and faith-sensitive where requested.
Guided by our signature workbook, Vows & Values
- Meaningful conversations before marriage on communication, conflict, and family background
- Finances, values, and faith
- Emotional connection, intimacy, parenting, and shared goals
Who Premarital Counselling Is For
Premarital counselling is for couples who are dating seriously, engaged, preparing for marriage, or considering a long-term commitment. It is not only for couples with problems — it is for couples who value preparation, honesty, and intentional love. It is helpful for couples who:
Want to understand each other more deeply before marriage
Desire stronger communication and conflict-resolution skills
Want to discuss expectations before making a lifelong commitment
Are preparing for a wedding and want to prepare for the marriage too
Come from different family, cultural, spiritual, or financial backgrounds
Want support discussing sensitive topics in a safe environment
Need help clarifying values, roles, goals, and future plans
Want faith-sensitive preparation alongside professional counselling
What Happens in Premarital Counselling
Premarital counselling begins by understanding your relationship story, your hopes for marriage, and the areas you want to strengthen before your wedding. The process may include:
A joint intake session with both partners
Guided conversations using the Vows & Values workbook
Exploration of your relationship history and family background
Assessment of communication, conflict, values, trust, and expectations
Practical exercises to improve listening and understanding
Conversations around finances, faith, intimacy, parenting, and future goals
Support in identifying strengths and areas of growth
Homework or reflection exercises between sessions
Our Approach
Using the Vows & Values workbook, couples are guided through intentional conversations that help them understand not only what they love about each other, but also how they will handle real-life marriage issues such as conflict, money, family expectations, and shared responsibility. Where requested, faith-sensitive support can be included in a respectful and professional way.
Build emotional safety
Understand each partner's background and expectations
Strengthen friendship and connection
Learn healthy conflict management
Discuss difficult topics before marriage
Build trust and transparency
Expected Outcomes
Premarital counselling does not promise a perfect marriage. Instead, it helps couples develop the awareness, skills, and conversations needed for a healthier marriage. Couples may leave the process with:
Better understanding of each other
Stronger communication skills
Clearer expectations for marriage
Shared values and goals
Increased confidence about the decision to marry
A completed Vows & Values workbook to use as an ongoing relationship resource
Recommended Session Length
Premarital counselling can be offered as a structured package or as individual sessions depending on the couple's needs. A standard premarital session is usually 2 hours.
A full premarital counselling journey may include up to 10 sessions, depending on the depth of preparation required, the couple's timeline, and whether there are complex issues that need more attention. Extended sessions or premarital intensives may also be available for couples with limited time before the wedding.
